To Thine Own Self Be True
I was reading A Simple Book of Living by Ruskin Bond and I came across this quote from Hamlet by Shakespeare, spoken by Polonius, the character I mostly disliked when I first read Hamlet in school. The quote goes:
This above all, to thine own self be true, And it must follow as the night of the day, Thou can’st not be false to any man.
Which roughly means, if you are true to yourself, you will never be false to anyone else. Loved it!
Ruskin Bond gives a great explanation -
Each of one of us is a mass of imperfections, and to be able to recognize and live with our imperfections- our basic natures, defects of genes and birth- makes, I think, for an easier transit on life’s journey.
